What kind of mask do I need for resin?

Lots of resin is sold as non-toxic and safe to use, however, we always recommend using a mask for extra protection*.

This is especially the case if you don’t have sufficient ventilation (enough fresh air flowing in to your craft space with fumes being able to leave) either with windows or doors or by using a purifier.

Maks for working with resin

A dust mask or masks like you used during Covid will not give you the right protection while working with resin.

They will not filter out the fumes that are associated with UV and Epoxy resins. You will need to choose a mask that is a respirator with organic vapor cartridges (look for NIOSH-approved).

The 3M respirator mask (available to buy from Amazon here) with replaceable filters is a great choice.

As stated on the 3M website – Their respirator mask ‘PROVIDES A2P3 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION – A2 protection against certain organic gases and vapours such as solvent based paint, adhesive and cleaning detergents, and P3 protection with 99% particulate filtration at medium levels of fine dust and mist.’

This means you’ll be protected against both resin chemicals and dust.

Important to note

Your resin should come with its own safety data sheet. Always check with your sheet or contact the manufacturer to check what their exact personal protective equipment / mask recommendations are.
